WASHINGTON — Just how common has cannabidiol (CBD) product use gotten among American adults? According to a recent Gallup poll, 14%—one in seven—adult consumers report personally using CBD products. Comparatively, the survey, conducted June 19-July 12, 2019, found 35% of adult consumers reported “not being familiar at all” with CBD products. Here are four other takeaways from the Gallup poll …
Approximately one in five (20%) of respondents ages 18-29 reported using CBD, with just 26% of that age group being unfamiliar with the category. However, both CBD consumption and familiarity went down progressively as age groups increased, as illustrated in this chart:
Age group | Usage rate | Unfamiliarity rate |
---|---|---|
18-29 | 20% | 26% |
30-49 | 16% | 30% |
50-64 | 11% | 36% |
65+ | 8% | 49% |

Gallup observed a similar pattern evident in marijuana, with younger adults reporting higher usage rates than older consumers.
Gallup found that 21% of consumers in Western states are using CBD products. By comparison, 13% of respondents from the South reported CBD product use, dropping to 11% in both Eastern and Midwest states. The study said many Western states have legalized either recreational or medical marijuana, meaning CBD products have likely been available to West Coast consumers for a longer period of time.
In addition to whether they used CBD products, Gallup also polled consumers on what they use them for. Of the respondents who use CBD products, 40% said it was for some kind of pain relief. Other frequent uses included help with anxiety (20%), sleep/insomnia (11%), arthritis (8%), migraines/headaches (5%) and stress (5%).
While 40% of both men and women use CBD products for pain, the genders differ on other top reasons for CBD product use. While 25% of women reported using CBD products to help with anxiety (vs. 14% of men), 15% of men reported using CBD products to help with sleep (vs. 8% of women).
