KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Customers who download or open the Pilot Flying J app on Tuesday, Feb. 9, can snag a one-time redemption offer for a free slice of pizza with the purchase of any size fountain drink.
The offer, in honor of National Pizza Day, is good at one of the more than 350 participating Pilot Flying J locations serving the travel center’s in-house pizza.
“Come enjoy a slice of the freshest pizza on the interstate to celebrate National Pizza Day,” said Jamie King, senior director of food and beverage for Pilot Flying J. “Our pizzas are baked daily and available in an assortment of recipes, so there’s something for every pizza lover.”
When redeeming the offer, customers can choose any Pilot Flying J pizza, including cheese, pepperoni, mega meat, supreme, sausage gravy, loaded omelet and the current limited-time buffalo chicken. Pilot Flying J pizzas are never frozen.

This isn’t Pilot’s first foray into pizza promotions. In March 2020, the company offered $5 off on extra-large whole pizzas through March 15 to customers on the mobile app for Pi Day, the celebration of the mathematical constant pi, 3.14.
National Pizza Day, Feb. 9, was first celebrated in 2000, but it’s unclear who started it, according to National Day Archives. The modern birthplace of pizza, with flatbread, cheese and sauce, is from the Campania region of Italy, which is home to Naples, according to History.com.
Several websites, including Spizzico Italian Kitchen, say that today's pizza started in the 18th century. But much further back in time, there is archaeological evidence among the ancient Greeks of what appears to be flatbreads with spots, according to First We Feast.
In 1905, America’s first pizzeria, Lombardi’s, opened in New York, according to multiple sources.
