CHICAGO  Convenience-store retailers looking to branch out in foodservice might want to consider vending machines that sell ramen and noodle bowl combinations.

Issy-les-Moulineaux, France-based food services company Sodexo is partnering with Hayward, Calif.-based Yo Kai Express, which develops autonomous restaurants offering gourmet food 24/7, to bring college students convenient meal choices this spring.

The vending machines, which can create more than 80 ramen and noodle bowl combinations, already are operating at New Mexico State University, offering students the opportunity to order meals via touchscreen anytime day or night.

“Students want three things: convenience, choice and quality—often in that order,” said Kevin Rettle, global vice president of Sodexo innovation and digital for universities.

The same can be said for c-store customers.
