California Play at the Pump Lottery Pilot Expanding

More than 120 fuel retailers on board, with more in the pipeline

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The California Lottery continues to expand its pilot program for motorists to purchase lottery tickets at the gasoline dispenser.

California Lottery Play at the Pump

Beginning with one location in Sacramento, Calif., in December 2014, more than 120 fuel retailers are now offering the service, which allows customers to buy up to $20 worth of quick-pick lottery tickets per visit up to $50 per week.

Games include Powerball, Mega Millions and the state’s SuperLotto Plus.

Purchases are “ticketless.” Players will get a receipt from the fuel pump with their numbers on it. Players also have the option of receiving a text message with a link to their numbers and the details of their purchase.

Only debit cards can be used in Play at the Pump purchases. Credit cards are not allowed. There is a $1 fee per transaction.

Customers must be 18 years old or older. The technology, provided by New York City-based Linq3, includes responsible-play and driver’s license-based age-verification controls, ensuring protections are in place for the lottery and the player.

As many as 40 more locations are interested in offering the service, California Lottery Commission spokesperson Alex Traverso told CSP Daily News. The commission is evaluating which stations to add.

In addition to California, Play at the Pump is available in North Carolina, Missouri and Minnesota.
