EVgo Inc., a public electric-vehicle (EV) fast-charging network, is opening its first fast-charging station using the company’s new prefabrication approach. The new station will debut at the Bay Colony Town Center in League City, Texas, and could act as an opportunity for convenience-store retailers to decide to invest.

Through prefabrication, all charging equipment—including dispensers, power cabinets and any additional necessary equipment—is assembled in a single base frame before being shipped to the fast-charging site. By using this process wherever possible, EVgo expects to accelerate timelines while ensuring consistent, high-quality assembly in a controlled environment. This approach also allows EVgo to perform pre-commissioning at the fabrication facility, which is anticipated to further accelerate deployment timelines.

All prefabricated stations are expected to include 350-kilowatt high-power fast chargers, capable of simultaneous charging. It can also incorporate Wi-Fi infrastructure, lighting, security cameras and integrated canopies.

The new EVgo station is the first of several slated to open this year leveraging prefabrication. Outside of Texas, EVgo plans to open prefabricated stations in Florida, Nebraska, North Carolina and California in 2024.

It is expected to reduce station construction costs by an average of 15% at eligible sites. In addition to cost savings, the prefabrication approach is also expected to reduce station installation timelines by as much as 50%.

“The opening of our first prefabricated site is a testament to the innovation driving cost reductions and accelerating deployment timelines to scale our growth engine,” said Dennis Kish, president of EVgo. “As demand for public fast charging infrastructure continues to grow, we anticipate leveraging this model at eligible sites to quickly deploy charging stations across the U.S.”
