Giant Eagle’s Fuelperks Can Now Be Used for Grocery Discounts

Loyalty reward discounts can be redeemed for either gas or merchandise

PITTSBURGH As the first modification to its fuelperks loyalty rewards program in several years, grocery and convenience-store retailer Giant Eagle has enhanced the ways Advantage cardholder customers can be rewarded aside from gas discounts alone.

Giant Eagle launched fuelperks in 2013 and expanded the program in Indianapolis in 2017. This month, it began rolling out fuelperks plus in Giant Eagle and Market District grocery stores and GetGo c-stores in its core Pittsburgh and Cleveland markets.

The fuelperks plus program keeps the 10-cent reward for $50 spent intact, but now allows rewards points to be used for discounts on groceries. Giant Eagle Advantage cardholders now earn rewards on all transactions, including groceries, gift cards, prescriptions and fuel, which can be reciprocally redeemed for either gas or groceries.

The 10-cent grocery reward offers 2% off an order; 500 perks, for instance, would equal 20% off the total grocery purchase.

Giant Eagle's Advantage card is used for more than 90% of all of the retailer’s transactions, and customers redeemed $230 million in fuelperks rewards in 2018, Giant Eagle spokesperson Dan Donovan told the Pittsbugh Post-Gazette.

Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle Inc., with $8.9 billion in annual sales, operates 175 corporate and 54 independently owned and operated supermarkets in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana. It also has 210 GetGo c-stores in western Pennsylvania, Ohio, northern West Virginia, Maryland and Indiana, as well as 56 Ricker's c-stores in the Indianapolis and Fort Wayne, Ind., metropolitan areas and central Indiana. Giant Eagle's convenience division is No. 27 in the Top 40 update to CSP's2018 Top 202 ranking of c-store chains by number of retail outlets.
