Jiffy Mart Staff Ready to Act

Team members getting certified in CPR, use of defibrillators

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- So far, 24 Jiffy Mart team members have been certified in first aid and CPR through the American Red Cross. Statistics show that more than 200,000 Americans die of sudden cardiac arrest every year. Up to 50,000 of these deaths could have been prevented if someone had initiated the cardiac chain of survival and an automated external defibrillator (AED) had been available for immediate use at the time of emergency.

Tom Moser, general manager of Jiffy Mart, said, "We started with 24 team members, but we are planning to certify additional associates later [image-nocss] this year. The Jiffy Mart Team recommends the training course for someone in each family and at each place of business."

The American Red Cross has a goal of one person in every household being trained in CPR lifesaving skills, all Americans being within four minutes of an AED and someone trained to use that AED in the event of sudden cardiac arrest.

There are four Jiffy Mart locations in Carroll County, Md., that are owned by Tevis Oil Inc., two in Westminster, one in Hampstead and one in Finksburg. Each location is supplied with an AED and a person who has been trained to use it.

Dwayne Cover, Jiffy Mart's business manager said, "I hope we don't have to use it, but if we do, we'll be there for our customers."
