Verifone Investigates Internal Computer Network Breach

Company’s payment-services network was reportedly not affected

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Verifone, one of the largest makers of credit-card terminals in the United States, is reporting a security breach that targeted gas stations and convenience stores.

The attack appears to have targeted a number of the payment-reader manufacturer’s point-of-sale (POS) systems and at least two dozen gas stations or convenience stores.

“We are currently investigating an IT control matter in the Verifone environment,” wrote Steve Horan, Verifone Inc.’s senior vice president and chief information officer, in a memo shared by KrebsonSecurity.com. “As a precaution, we are taking immediate steps to improve our controls.”

San Jose, Calif.-based Verifone has stated that the breach was limited to its corporate network and did not affect its payment-services network.
