WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Reynolds American Inc. is sponsoring TruAge, the digital age-verification system from NACS and Conexxus.

“Reynolds is proud to support TruAge to deliver innovative age-verification technology to help keep tobacco products out of the hands of minors,” said Frank Silva, senior vice president of activation and trade marketing. “We never want our products in the hands of minors.”

Reynolds has demonstrated that tobacco and nicotine products can be marketed responsibly to adult consumers while limiting youth exposure to its products, Silva said. The partnership with TruAge will further the tobacco company’s commitment to keep youth tobacco prevention at the forefront of its efforts, he said.

TruAge, developed by NACS, the global trade association that represents the convenience and fuel retailing industry, and Conexxus, its standards-setting partner, makes the traditional carding experience more convenient and accurate. TruAge is free to retailers, consumers and POS providers, and its relevant intellectual property will be placed in the public domain—removing significant barriers to adoption. Several other sponsors, like Altria Group Distribution Co., Anheuser-Bush and Molson Coors Beverage Co., also support TruAge.

NACS, founded in 1961 as the National Association of Convenience Stores, and Conexxus are both based in Alexandria, Va.

Reynolds American Inc., Winston-Salem, N.C., is a wholly owned subsidiary of the British American Tobacco (BAT) Group and the U.S. parent company of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co. Inc., American Snuff Co. LLC, R.J. Reynolds Vapor Co. and Modoral Brands Inc.
