A-B, Kellogg Big Packaging Winners

7-Eleven, Chick-fil-A, Pizza Hut, others take annual honors

FALLS CHURCH, Va. -- A 16-oz. aluminum bottle used by Anheuser-Busch Inc. for its upscale beer packaging was named the overall 2005 Foodservice Package of the Year in the fourth annual QSR-Foodservice & Packaging Institute (FPI) foodservice packaging awards competition.

St. Louis-based A-B's bottle was deemed the best of the best from among 111 entries in seven categories. In addition to its top selection, the bottle was selected for first place in The WOW!! Factor category in the competition.

In selecting the A-B aluminum [image-nocss] bottle, the judges said: The use of the aluminum bottle is a huge change in the adult beverage market. It is very eye catching in its use of graphics, top to bottom, versus standard bottles and bottle labels. This would be a great package in any fast casual restaurant that serves alcohol.

FPI president John R. Burke said, All of the competition categories featured unique and outstanding packages, but the aluminum bottle really impressed the judges. It definitely stood out, both in its category, and in the entire field of entries, said Kudos to A-B for its decision to use this consumer-pleasing package.

Kellogg's Drink n Crunch portable cereal cup was the first-place winner of the competition's Consumer ConvenienceFood Packaging category, which honors food packaging that is unique and, through innovative physical design or features, makes the package more appealing, easier to use and convenient in a way that increases sales. It was also awarded second-place in The WOW!! Factor category, honoring foodservice packaging that is unique, creative and gets the consumer's attention by combining physical design, graphics and/or technological enhancements.

Competition judges called Kellogg's Drink n Crunch a great concept that marries creative product design and consumer convenience in a package that provides consumers the mobility they crave in today's on the go world, Battle Creek, Mich.-based The Kellogg Co. said in a press statement.

The Drink n Crunch package uses the Tip n' Mix dual-cup design. Fresh milk is added to the outer cup while the cereal is housed in the inner cup. The cereal and milk remain separate until they meet in the consumers' mouth, enabling the cereal to stay fresh and crispy.

Drink n Crunch is available in four varieties: Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, Special K Vanilla and Crunchy Blends Low-Fat Granola.
