Casey's Outside Comfort Zone

Pittsburg, Kansas, new-design location slated to open in October
PITTSBURG, Kansas In an exception to its traditional strategy of putting convenience stores in towns with a population of 5,000 or less, Casey's General Stores Inc. corporate management has decided to try something new. It is locating a Casey's General Store in Pittsburg, Kansas, reported The Morning Sun.

"Kansas has been a very nice state for us," Casey's General Stores chief financial officer Bill Walljasper told the newspaper. "Pittsburg is one of those communities that we felt we could serve well with our products."

As of Jan. 31, 2010, Casey's had 1,507 [image-nocss] stores in nine states: Kansas, South Dakota, Minnesota, Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin and Iowa.

There are stores located in Carl Junction, Mo., Columbus, Galena, Liberal, Mo. and Lamar, Mo. Walljasper said that the Pittsburg location will feature a full array of food such as their storemade pizza and donuts.

"We are a top-10 retailer of pizza and donuts in the country," Walljasper added. "We are a brand and started prepared food back in the 1980s."

The Pittsburg location will be one of 95 stores that are of a new design, said the report. Walljasper said that the location will be about 1,000 square feet larger than traditional Casey's store and will include larger beverage coolers, a made-to-order sub sandwich area and an expanded coffee bar with different flavors and machines as well as a sitdown area for customers.
He said that the company has been actively pursuing new markets to locate in.

"We are trying to increase the number of our stores and it is a combination of new store construction and store acquisitions," Walljasper said. "Most of our store growth is from acquisitions."

Depending on the growth of the store, there will be around 12 full and part-time employees and the tentative completion date for the new store is October 2010, said the report.
