Hitch'n Post Gets Hitched to Flying J

Truckstop chain will upgrade foodservice

DODGE CITY, Kansas -- After nearly 10 years of owning the Hitch'n Post Truck Stop & Restaurant, Tom Kindsvater and his wife have sold it to Flying J Inc., which owns 230 truckstops across the United States and Canada, reported The Dodge City Daily Globe.

It took about eight months to close the deal, and the Kindsvaters are pleased that Flying J is taking over the property, Tom Kindsvater told the newspaper after a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday at the truckstop. "The Flying J will take this to a higher level," he said.

Terms [image-nocss] of the sale were not disclosed, said the report.

The ceremony attracted Dodge City, Kansas, and Ford County officials as well as representatives from the Dodge City Area Chamber of Commerce. A large pair of wooden scissors and a precut red ribbon were used for the ribbon cutting, and Chamber President Bob Wetmore presented Flying J officials with certificates wishing them success with their new property.

The company started operating the Hitch'n Post Tuesday morning, and customers will see an immediate impact on the convenience store side, said Scott McMillan, vice president for retail. He added that the company has several different restaurant concepts and has not yet decided which concept will work best in Dodge City. "The restaurant we're going to leave as is and really look for some input from the community," he told the paper.

McMillan said the company will remodel the property, but the extent of the remodeling has not been decided yet.

District manager Greg Yakish said the transition from the Kindsvaters to Flying J went smoothly, and he was pleased with the community's support for the change.

Ford County Commission Chairman Kim Goodnight said city and county officials had worked with Flying J representatives to make the transition possible, and they wanted to make sure the company felt welcome in Dodge City and Ford County.
