The new Subway openings for 2010 also included 559 nontraditional locations (179 in the United States and Canada), bringing the chain's total number of restaurants in places such as airports, [image-nocss] college campuses, convenience stores and hospitals to more than 7,700.
The chain reached the milestone of 10,000 international locations owned and operated by more than 6,000 franchisees. The total worldwide franchisee count is 17,000, which includes more than 11,000 U.S. franchisees.
In Canada, the Subway chain reached a high of 2,500 locations from coast to coast, including 300 in the province of Alberta.
Despite the difficult economy, the total number of U.S. Subway restaurants crossed the 23,000 mark while several individual states reached milestones of their own. The state of California reached 2,300 locations early in 2010 and then 2,400 locations 10 months later. Meanwhile, Texas crossed the 1,800 line and Florida finished the year with more than 1,400 stores. Ohio is now the home of 1,100 Subway restaurants and the good folks of Pennsylvania celebrated the milestone of 800 locations. Other milestones include 400 locations in Maryland and 200 locations in Utah.
