Thorntons Opens 44th Store in Louisville Metro Area

Company also donates $1 million to Speed Art Museum
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- On December 16, Thorntons Inc. held the grand opening of its newest location, in Louisville, its 44th store in the Louisville metropolitan area. This latest addition expands the number of Thorntons store locations to 165, with operations in the Midwestern strongholds of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.

"Our newest store in Louisville is an important element of Thorntons' evolution and expansion," said CEO Matt Thornton. "Not only does this grand opening celebrate our roots in the Louisville area, it showcases our commitment to the local [image-nocss] economy and the one-of-a-kind service we continue to offer our loyal customers. But it doesn't end there; this is strategic expansion of our brand as we continue to grow community by community, city by city, state by state."

Thorntons customers will experience a redesigned, clean and friendly environment with a focus on high-quality foods such as fresh sandwiches, salads and fruits, plus enhanced offerings of hot beverages, particularly Thorntons premium-blend coffees and fountain drinks. It will offer several customer-appreciation promotions during the opening days and weeks of the celebration, highlighted by free coffee and fountain beverages for everyone, buy one-get one specials, as well as weekly doorbuster giveaways.

In addition, customers will get the everyday specialties they have come to expect from Thorntons with "hot off the grill" convenience food items, hot, cold and frozen beverages made with 100% filtered water, food and grocery items at economical prices and the most competitively priced premium fuel available for any type of vehicle.

Additionally, Thorntons offers eco-friendly E85 Flex Fuel (85% ethanol and 15% gasoline) at the new location. It is a renewable, domestic, environmentally friendly fuel that enhances the nation's economy and energy independence and creates little to no emissions at the tail pipe, which means cleaner air and a reduction in pollution. Along with its plans for an expansion of E85, Thorntons continues to explore alternative fuel options, offering its customers the most affordable and environmentally efficient fuels for all of their driving needs.

In other company news, Thorntons has announced a $1 million donation to The Speed Art Museum's Changing Speed Capital Campaign. The Capital Campaign will fund the expansion and renovation of the museum's site in Louisville. The expansion will serve the community through new programming and increased space for educational initiatives, public events and additional gallery space to present the Speed's collection.

The Thornton family has been avid supporters of the visual and performing arts with this donation being made in honor of Mrs. Bonnie Thornton. She previously served on the Speed Museum board and continues to be actively involved. Mrs. Thornton, whose husband James founded Thorntons in 1971, is thrilled to continue to support the Speed Art Museum with this gift.

"Since our inception almost 40 years ago we have made a dedicated commitment to recognize and assist the multitude of diverse nonprofit organizations in the Louisville area," Matt Thornton said, "and we continuously explore ways to give back to the communities that we serve. It is a great pleasure and an honor to donate this gift to The Speed Art Museum, one that will advance the arts through expanded educational programs and events for our community."

Thorntons operates 165 gasoline and convenience stores, car washes and travel plazas in five states: Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee. Thorntons distributes its petroleum products through its wholly owned Thornton Transportation Co. and operates a river bulk storage terminal in Louisville.
