New book, Remembering Harry Kalas, goes on sale exclusively at Wawa
WAWA, Pa. -- Wawa Inc. said that beginning today, it convenience stores will begin exclusively selling a book honoring the life of famed Philadelphia Phillies announcer Harry Kalas, entitled Remembering Harry Kalas: Wonderful Stories from Friends Celebrating a Great Life. Kalas served almost four decades as the baseball team's play-by-play announcer.

Written and compiled by author Rich Wolfe, the book consists of stories from the people who knew Harry best, including his family, Phillies employees and members of the media, as well as 32 pages of photos.

Remembering [image-nocss] Harry Kalas takes Philadelphia fans into the locker rooms and press boxes, as well as out on the town to all the places Harry loved best, giving readers a behind the scenes look into this hometown heroes' life. This is the first commemorative, hard-back book Wawa will ever sell in store in the company's history.

Remembering Harry Kalas will be sold at all of Wawa's 400 stores throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, at the checkout counter. The brand-new hardcover book will be priced at $9.99, which is 60% off the publisher's suggested retail price of $24.95, for a savings of almost $15.

In honor of Harry, Wawa will be donating $10,000 to a charity selected by the Kalas family.

Wawa, a privately held company, began in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. Toward the end of the 19th century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, Pa, in 1902. The milk business was a huge success, due to its quality, cleanliness and "certified" process. As home delivery of milk declined in the early 1960s, Grahame Wood, George's grandson, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 as an outlet for dairy products. Today, Wawa operates more than 560 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.
