BURLINGAME, Calif. -- Produce distributor Splendid Products has voluntarily recalled certain lots of Daniella-brand mangoes distributed nationwide between July 12 and Aug. 29, 2012, because they may be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup. As a consequence, Ready Pac Foods Inc., Irwindale, Calif., has voluntarily recalled certain packaged fruit products containing mangoes, distributed through Aug. 30, 2012, since they contain Daniella-brand mangoes. Wawa, Walmart and Starbucks are among affected retailers.
Wawa is recalling certain prepared fruit cups, including mango products, with specific date codes; the recalled product that was distributed was limited to 135 Wawa convenience stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and Delaware for retail sale. The product was not distributed to Wawa stores in Virginia or Florida.
No illnesses have been reported specific to the Ready Pac products that are the subject of this voluntary, precautionary recall, said the company.
Splendid Products sold the recalled mangoes, a product of Mexico, as individual fruit and can be identified by the Daniella brand sticker and one of the following PLU numbers: 3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959. The recalled mangoes were sold at various retail stores throughout the U.S. between July 12 and August 29, 2012.
Mangoes have been linked to a number of recent cases of salmonellosis in Canada, and may be linked to cases in California and perhaps other states. Although an investigation is still ongoing, out of an abundance of caution, Splendid Products is recalling Daniella mangoes in the U.S. The recall is being conducted in consultation with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the California Department of Public Health.
Companies are advising consumers who have bought the recalled mangoes not to eat them and to discard them. If there is no identifying sticker on the mango, consider discarding or returning the product to the place of purchase. They are telling retailers to check their inventories and store shelves to confirm that none of the products are present or available for purchase by consumers or in warehouse inventories.
The Ready Pac voluntary recall extends only to the products with the use-by dates listed below and sold in the following states: Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Washington, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming and Canada.
No other Ready Pac products are included in the recall.

Wawa's recall is a result of a voluntary, precautionary recall by Taylor Farms New Jersey for the following products containing Daniella-brand mangoes or products potentially processed on common equipment with the Daniella-brand mangoes.
Daniella-brand mangoes were identified by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) as having the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup, and are subject to a prior recall posted by CFIA and the FDA. All products can be identified with the following information:
The only products affected by this action have both the following Julian codes and sell by dates:
- Wawa Mango, 8-oz.; Julian Code: 237 or earlier; Sell-By Date: 8/30/12 or earlier.
- Wawa Pineapple, Strawberries, Mango, 9-oz.; 237 or earlier; 8/30/12 or earlier.
- Wawa Pineapple Snack, 7-oz.; 237 or earlier; 8/30/12 or earlier.
- Wawa Melon Mix, 11-oz.; 237 or earlier; 8/30/12 or earlier.
- Wawa Large Mixed Fruit, 12-oz.; 237 or earlier; 8/30/12 or earlier.
- Wawa Watermelon, 8-oz.; 237 or earlier; 8/30/12 or earlier.
- Wawa Small Mixed Fruit, 7.5-oz.; 237 or earlier; 8/30/12 or earlier.
- Wawa Mixed Fruit with Kiwi, 9.7-oz.; 237 or earlier; 8/30/12 or earlier.
- Wawa Mango & Yogurt Parfait, 7.5-oz.; 236 or earlier; 9/03/12 or earlier.
The retailer has since expanded the recall to include:
- Wawa Mango, 8-oz.; cup 8/31, 9/3, 9/5, 9/6.
- Wawa Chicken & Mango Salsa Green Salad; 7.5-oz., 9/1 and 9/3.
Product not bearing a Julian code is not affected by this action and is manufactured by another supplier, Wawa said.
The Taylor Farm New Jersey recall is part of a larger, national recall by the suppliers of the Daniella-brand mangoes.
The expanded recall is a result of a voluntary, precautionary recall issued by the supplier, Missa Bay LLC, for products containing Daniella Brand mangoes. Missa Bay is a wholly owned subsidiary of Ready Pac Foods.
"We want to stress that the product has been recalled voluntarily as a precaution," said Wawa. "There have been no reported illnesses to date in relation to the products referenced in the Taylor Farms New Jersey recall."
