Up, Up & Away in Valero's Miracle Balloons

Corner Stores raise record amount for Children's Miracle Network
SAN ANTONIO -- Through the generosity of Valero Corner Store customers and the enthusiasm of thousands of Valero Corner Store employees, the company last Thursday celebrated a record amount raised for the Children's Miracle Network: $1,394,009. In a special presentation at Valero headquarters, company representatives handed a check for the full amount to the Children's Miracle Network's official ambassador, Miss America 2008 Kirsten Haglund.

The total represents an 18% increase over last year's efforts and the most successful retail charitable campaign in company history. [image-nocss] Valero Corner Stores have supported the Children's Miracle Network since 1995, contributing more than $9.25 million to the organization through direct contributions and funds raised by customers and associates in eight states. Valero is the only refining and marketing company in the nation to campaign for the Children's Miracle Network, it said.

"I couldn't be more proud of the work our Corner Store employees have done for Children's Miracle Network this year," said Gary Arthur, Valero retail president. "We are also grateful for the generosity of our customers. We view this effort as a team-the customers, our Corner Store associates and the Children's Miracle Network. All of us working together to support children's hospitals across the country."

Valero raises money for the Children's Miracle Network by selling paper "Miracle Balloons" at its Corner Stores, one dollar at a time. The full amount is then shared by Children's Miracle Network-designated hospitals in each area where Valero has retail operations.

The Children's Miracle Network delivers funds on behalf of businesses, organizations and individuals to 170 children's hospitals worldwide.

"Valero's increase of 18% over 2007 shows not only dedication, but a recognition that during these economic difficulties there is a great need for every person, in every community to reach out and help those around them," said Scott Burt, president and CEO of Children's Miracle Network. "Valero Corner Stores continue to help make miracles happen for children in communities throughout the country. We are truly grateful for their endless service to Children's Miracle Network hospitals."

Valero Energy Corp., San Antonio, owns and operates 16 refineries throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean with a combined throughput capacity of approximately 3.1 million barrels per day, making it the largest refiner in North America. Valero is also one of the nation's largest retail operators with approximately 5,800 retail and branded wholesale outlets in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean under various brand names including Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar and Beacon.
