Sheetz Sponsors Habitat for Humanity House

Retailer provides supplies, volunteers, architectural work, $15,000 in donations
EVERETT, Pa. -- Sheetz Inc. approached the Bedford County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity late last year to ask if the company could sponsor a Habitat house. In the last 10 months, they have given supplies and provided volunteers to help create a ranch home suitable for Jennifer Hall and her 7-year-old son, Deegan, reported The Altoona Mirror.

"They've done so much with this," Habitat for Humanity office manager Jamie Fleetwood told the newspaper concerning Sheetz's role in the process. "It's been quite a blessing."

Each year, Bedford County Habitat builds [image-nocss] a home for a family in need. This is the ninth home across the county that the organization has worked on so far, the report said. Most houses take about nine months to finish.

In addition to lining up supplies and volunteers, Sheetz has done all of the architectural work and even got $15,000 worth of donations, the report added.

A groundbreaking for the home took place late last week, said the report, with hopes of a completed project in time for the holiday season.

Habitat projects are interest-free houses that typically cost $60,000 or less to build, said the report. Chosen families must make $18,000 or more a year and are willing to provide hundreds of "sweat equity" hours toward their home or another Habitat project.

Hall's home will be a ranch-style house with a living room, large kitchen and dining area, three bedrooms, one bathroom, a utility room for laundry, a new refrigerator and stove provided by Whirlpool, a crawl space for storage, central air conditioning and heating.

Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz is a family-owned and -operated c-store chain with more than $4.9 billion in revenue for 2008 and more than 12,000 employees. The company operates more than 350 convenience locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. All Sheetz stores are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
