Winn-Dixie Expands Fuelperks! Discounts

Seeking to help local motorists deal with rising gasoline prices
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Winn-Dixie Stores Inc. has expanded the discounts earned through its fuelperks! program as of April 13 by lifting previous one-item limit restrictions on Bonus fuelperks! rewards items. This means if a customer purchases three of any particular Bonus fuelperks! rewards item that earns a five-cent-per-gallon discount, he or she will now earn a 15-cent-per-gallon discount for that transaction.

"Some transportation analysts are predicting fuel prices to hit $4 per gallon by summer," said Mary Kellmanson, Winn-Dixie's group vice president of marketing. "[image-nocss] Many of our customers are telling us they are saving 50 to 75 cents per gallon or more by shopping at Winn-Dixie. They will be able to earn more fuelperks! discounts--and faster--with this expansion of our fuelperks! rewards."

The fuelperks! program at Winn-Dixie serves as a solution for many local motorists with the increase in gasoline prices, which have risen nearly 20 cents per gallon in the past two weeks to an average of $3.77 per gallon. The key to the fuel savings program is the Winn-Dixie Customer Reward Card (CRC), which includes a magnetic stripe on the back, similar to a debit or credit card. This new card is required in order to earn and redeem fuelperks! rewards.

For every $50 in qualified purchases using the new CRC at Winn-Dixie, a five-cent-per-gallon discount on fuel is earned and redeemable on a single fillup, up to 20 gallons, at any one of more than 500 participating Shell stations. Additionally, fuelperks! are stackable--the more shoppers spend, the more they earn. For example, if a customer spends $100, they will earn a 10-cent-per-gallon discount; if they spend $150, they earn a 15-cent-per-gallon discount and so on.

With a number of different Bonus fuelperks! rewards items each week, shoppers can quickly increase their savings, earning 25- to 50-cent-per-gallon discounts or more with that $50 purchase. Bonus items that are earned in varying ratios (earn five cents on purchase of two) will still require customers to purchase the two items to receive the discount. Customers may also continue to purchase multiple offers in a single transaction.

The fuelperks! program is available in the Jacksonville, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Naples/Fort Myers, Panama City and West Palm Beach metro areas in Florida, southeast Georgia and in New Orleans, Lafayette and Baton Rouge, La.

Jacksonville, Fla.-based Winn-Dixie Stores is one of the nation's largest food retailers. It currently operates 484 retail grocery locations, including 379 in-store pharmacies, in Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia and Mississippi.

Separately, Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. is expanding its fuel rewards program at 40 mid-Tennessee Kroger Fuel Centers and at participating Shell station locations, reported The Tennessean. The grocery store chain is allowing customers to accumulate discounts of up to $1 per gallon, up from a previous limit of 10 cents.

A percentage of customers' total monthly purchase inside the grocery stores is discounted from the per-gallon cost at the pump. For every $100 spent, for example, customers would receive 10 cents off a gallon. For every $500, customers would get 50 cents off, and $1,000 spent would get the maximum $1 off.

The previous system capped the discount at 10 cents a gallon for every fillup, although customers could return multiple times during a month to redeem the discount. The latest offer is valid for up to 35 gallons of fuel per purchase.

Kroger, the nation's largest traditional grocery retailer, has 2,458 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 31 states under two-dozen local banner names including Kroger, City Market, Dillons, Jay C, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry's, King Soopers, QFC, Ralphs and Smith's. It also operates 786 convenience stores and 1,014 supermarket fuel centers. among other retail ventures.
