Celebrating the BLT

Lay's bacon, lettuce and tomato chips hit shelves for National BLT Sandwich Month

PLANO, Texas -- Lay's potato chips, a leading brand from PepsiCo's Frito-Lay division, has introduced Lay's Classic BLT-flavored potato chips, a new flavor that celebrates one of America's favorite sandwiches--the bacon, lettuce and tomato (BLT).

The new flavor is arriving on store shelves nationwide this month, which is also National BLT Sandwich Month.

"At Frito-Lay, our flavor experts find inspiration in all corners of the culinary universe. Our new Classic BLT-flavored Lay's potato chips prove that inspiration is sometimes closer than you think," said Ram Krishnan, vice president of marketing for Frito-Lay North America. "Pairing a delicious sandwich with our tasty Lay's potato chips is an American tradition that helped inspire us to create this new flavor--a simple indulgence that makes more sense together than apart--just like the BLT."

The BLT sandwich became popular when the rapid expansion of supermarkets after World War II made fresh produce more easily accessible year round. Lay's Classic BLT-flavored potato chips harness the traditional taste of the beloved sandwich by featuring the tastes of crispy bacon, refreshing lettuce and a sliver of tomato in every rewarding crunch.

The Lay's brand's introduction of Lay's Classic BLT potato chips also comes as the demand for bacon rises. Total bacon sales nationwide have been growing at a rapid pace over the last decade, highlighted by an 11% increase from 2010 to 2011, the company said.

The new Lay's Classic BLT-flavored potato chips are available nationwide in April in three sizes: a 1.9-ounce bag for a suggested retail price of $1.09; a 2.9-oz. bag for a suggested retail price of $1.49; and a 10-oz. bag for a suggested retail price of $4.29.

Lay's potato chips is one of the billion-dollar brands that makes up Plano, Texas-based Frito-Lay North America, the $13 billion convenient foods business unit of PepsiCo, which is based in Purchase, N.Y.
