Sunrise Strategic Partners will help meat snack maker scale its business

BOULDER, Colo. -- Sunrise Strategic Partners, a Boulder, Colo.-based accelerator of emerging brands co-founded by Steve Hughes and Trilantic North America, recently announced a minority investment in Perky Jerky, a maker of all-natural, ultra-premium beef and turkey meat snack products.

“Sunrise’s deep strategic experience in scaling businesses will be crucial to taking Perky Jerky to the next level. We need a playbook to do this and the resources to implement it. Sunrise will be a crucial partner in the next phase of growth for our brand,” said Brian Levin, “chairman of the herd” at Perky Jerky. “Sunrise values the culture that I have worked hard to create, and I’m looking forward to working closely with Steve and the Sunrise team as we continue to drive growth for Perky Jerky.”

Founded in 2009, Perky Jerky has been at the forefront of the demand for healthy, protein-rich snack options, it said.

“Perky Jerky is re-inventing meat-based protein snacking,” said Steve Hughes, CEO of Sunrise Strategic Partners. The product is designed to appeal to healthy, active consumers, he added.

“As founder of Perky Jerky, Brian Levin brings both a strong track record of growing emerging companies and a strong passion for the brand. I am very enthusiastic about working with Brian and the opportunities our partnership will create for Perky Jerky,” he said.

The investment in Greenwood Village, Colo.-based Perky Jerky marks the second for Sunrise, an investment vehicle that provides growth capital and expertise to emerging healthy, active and sustainable living brands to support their development, add strategic value and share guidance on tactical priorities.

Steve Hughes will also serve on the Perky Jerky board of directors.

Perky Jerky’s U.S. distribution includes more than 40,000 locations nationwide and includes retailers such as Whole Foods, Target, Wal-Mart, Costco, The Home Depot, CVS, Kroger, 7-Eleven Japan and more.

Sunrise Strategic Partners, based in Boulder, Colo., provides growth capital and expertise to emerging brands in the healthy, active and sustainable living space that resonate with millennials, have a strong proof of concept and have reached approximately $10 million to $20 million in revenue. The Sunrise team is experienced in scaling brands and supports these investments by adding strategic value and guidance on tactical priorities. Sunrise Strategic Partners was founded by Steve Hughes, founder of Boulder Brands, and Trilantic North America, a leading private-equity firm.
