State Tobacco Legislative News

Legislative actions take place on state level.

State legislatures are beginning to take action on tobacco-related bills. NATO provides a brief update:
Connecticut: Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy and certain legislators are supporting Senate Bill 1007, which would increase the cigarette tax by $.40 per pack to a new cigarette tax rate of $3.40 per pack--and raise the tax on moist snuff from $.55 per ounce to $1.00 per ounce.

New Hampshire: The New Hampshire Ways and Means Committee passed H.156, which would reduce the state cigarette tax by $.10 per pack.

North Dakota: [image-nocss] A bill that would have raised the state's cigarette tax by $.41 per pack failed to pass the state legislature.

Utah: As originally introduced, House Bill 170 would have made it a crime to sell flavored pipe tobacco, flavored cigarette tobacco and flavored chewing tobacco. However, the bill was recently amended to exempt from the proposed criminal penalty the sale of flavored pipe tobacco, flavored cigarette tobacco and flavored chewing tobacco. The sale of flavored cigars continues to be exempt from this criminal penalty.
