Kwik Trip is planning five new Kwik Star locations in South Dakota after opening its first in that state in September 2023.

The new locations are in the eastern part of the state: three in Sioux Falls, one in Brookings and another in Harrisburg. There currently are six Kwik Stars in South Dakota: four in Sioux Falls and one each in Brandon and Harrisburg.

The first South Dakota Kwik Star, at 101 N. Heritage Road in Brandon (pictured), opened Sept. 21.

When completed, there will be 11 Kwik Stars in the state.

  • Kwik Trip is No. 11 on CSP’s 2023 Top 202 ranking of convenience store chains by store count.

“We are expanding in South Dakota because there is a growing market there,” Kwik Trip spokesperson Ben Leibl told CSP. “We think the customer base and the opportunity to be of service in these communities will be a good match for us.”

The new location in Harrisburg will be completed by the middle of August, the three in Sioux Falls by the middle of October and the store in Brookings by the end of December, Leibl said.

La Crosse, Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip, which recently announced a $151 million expansion project, uses the name Kwik Star in South Dakota, Illinois and Iowa where it could compete with rival convenience retailer QuikTripBased in Tulsa, Oklahoma, QuikTrip operates about 950 c-stores in 16 states.
