United Supermarkets Opens New C-Store in Lubbock, Texas

Also breaking ground on United Express locations in Borger, Dumas

LUBBOCK, Texas -- United Supermarkets LLC opened a new United Express convenience store in Lubbock, Texas, in late December. The Market Street grocery store behind it will open on Jan. 9, the company said on Facebook. The company also announced that it will soon break ground on freestanding United Express c-stores at its Borger and Dumas, Texas, locations.

The Borger project will be followed shortly by a major remodeling effort for the main store.

Construction on both c-stores is beginning in early January, with completion targeted for mid-2013, according to Tony Crumpton, executive vice president of facilities, fuel and supply for United Supermarkets.

Each c-store will create 10 to 12 new jobs for their respective communities. They will be the company's sixth and seventh freestanding convenience locations. Each 2,400 square-foot facility will feature a full-service drive-thru window.

"One of the key attractions of the convenience store--and especially for the drive-thru window--will be our specialty coffee and tea service," Crumpton said. "Using our own popular Arriba brand, we'll offer a full line of made-to-order coffees and tea--including lattes, smoothies and frappes, on par with any other coffee retailer anywhere. Whether it's grabbing a hot latte in the morning or a bag of ice and gallon of milk on the way home, we believe our Borger and Dumas guests are truly going to enjoy the drive-thru experience."

The c-stores also will feature a five-pump (10-dispenser) fuel station offering both gasoline and diesel.

In addition to traditional convenience items (fountain drinks, grab-and-go packaged food, propane tank refills, etc.), United Express also will offer a wide assortment of

"fresh to-go" items made inside the main store, including breakfast burritos, hot sandwiches, fresh fruit and f'Real milkshakes and other frozen beverages.

Hours of operation will be 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily in Dumas, and 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. in Borger.

The remodeling of the main store in Borger is still in the planning stages but will start as quickly as possible following the completion of the c-store. "The full scope of work is still being determined, but we already know it will include an update of the interior, particularly the deli, along with new equipment and exterior updates where needed," Crumpton said.

The Borger United will get the first of five remodeling efforts planned by the company in 2013. "We intend to be more strategic in maintaining our retail locations in the years ahead in order to meet our guests' needs and positively impact their shopping experience," he said.

Now in its 96th year of operation, United Supermarkets, is a Texas-based, family-owned grocery chain with stores in 30 markets across north and west Texas. A self-distributing company with its headquarters in Lubbock and distribution centers in Lubbock and Roanoke, United currently operates 51 stores under four distinct formats: United Supermarkets, Market Street, Amigos United and United Express.
