Wawa Takes Wing

Latest c-store will be chain's first at an airport

PHILADELPHIA Harkening back to the origins of its name, Wawa Inc. will open a convenience store on the grounds of the Northeast Philadelphia Airport, the Pennsylvania-based store chain said, according to a Philadelphia Business Journal report.

The store will be the first Wawa located on airport grounds, the report said. The airport is owned by the city of Philadelphia.

"We are thrilled to be located on airport property and look forward to serving not only the local residents, but also the opportunity to serve the customers and [image-nocss] employees of the Philadelphia Northeast Airport," Howard Stoeckel, CEO of the Wawa, Pa.-based chain, told the newspaper.

The store is also a new design prototype of 5,700-square feet, more than double the size of many of the chain's stores. The store will have a deli, bakery and retail gasoline sales, and will feature blink technology for contactless credit-card transactions.

About 60 employees will work at the store.

It will be Wawa's 41st store in Philadelphia and the second of three stores to open in the city this summer, the report said.

Privately held Wawa, has more than 500 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.

According to Wawa's website, its original dairy farm was built more than 100 years ago on land located in a rural section of Pennsylvania called Wawa, a name borrowed from the local Native American tribe, which named it in honor of their favored gamethe Canada Goose. Just like a majestic flock of Canada Geese flying synchronously in V' formation, we employ the principles of teamwork, group consensus and encouragement in our company. We think it's the only way to fly, the company said.
