Foodservice Competitive Landscape, Future Growth 2015

C-stores, colleges and hospitals view QSRs as their biggest foodservice competition. Restaurants and NH/LTC/SL report similar locations as their biggest competition (particularly fast casual for the restaurant respondents). NH/LTC/SL is the one operation type that has the least concern about competition, with 46% of them indicating they do not have any competition.

Opportunities

  • “Expansion of business as others try to get out fast.”—QSR operator, five units
  • “Could expand sales in cafeteria to outside companies and public.”—Hospital operator

A Solid Year Ahead

Overall, respondents are bullish on sales expectations, with 82% indicating foodservice sales will improve in the year to come and a mere 2% expecting a decline. The only statistically significant outliers come from the non-commercial segment. Twenty-five percent of NH/LTC/SL operators reported they expect business to remain the same, vs. 10% to 16% for the other segments. Four percent of hospital operators report business might decline somewhat compared to 1% for NH/LTC/SL operators and 2% for C&U.
