Casey's Buys Market Express C-Store

Second Marion, Iowa, acquisition following ShortStop deal
MARION, Iowa -- After completing its acquisition of a ShortStop convenience store on Marion, Iowa's west side, Casey's General Stores Inc. has added the Market Express on the east side, according to a report by The Gazette. The Market Express was acquired from NH Petroleum LLC for $1.025 million last month, said the report, citing Linn County property records.

Casey's chief financial officer Bill Walljasper told the newspaper that only one store was included in the deal with NH Petroleum.

Originally a Conoco-branded station, the store was rebranded last week to Casey's, the report said. The acquisition includes a 4,000-square-foot store and 900-square-foot car and truck wash, it added.

The store is almost directly across from a discount gasoline outlet operated by Murphy Oil at the Marion Walmart Supercenter, said the report. Walljasper said that does not bother Casey's, which has several convenience stores near Murphy Oil locations. "We find that they drive traffic," he said.

He said that Murphy Oil stations do not have kitchens or prepared foods. Walljasper also told the paper that the two Marion convenience stores will be remodeled over the next six to 12 months to add kitchens so that they can add Casey's food concept.

Ankeny, Iowa-based Casey's has more than 1,530 stores in nine Midwestern states, primarily Iowa, Missouri and Illinois.
