That Vacation Gets the Green Light

Gas prices motivating motorists to hit the road, but what about regular driving habits?

MIAMI -- Six in 10 Americans say they are more likely to take a road trip of 50 miles or more away from home in 2015 if gas prices remain near recent levels, according to the recently published 2015 Gas Price Omnibus Report by AAA.

Younger Americans are more likely than older Americans to take a road trip: 68% of Americans aged 18 to 34 say they are more likely to take a road trip if gas prices remain near recent levels, while 57% of Americans aged 35 and above say they are more likely to take a road trip if gas prices remain near recent levels.

Only 13% of Americans report driving more due to recent gas prices. These results indicate that most Americans are unlikely to change their regular driving habits due to lower gas prices. Younger Americans are significantly more likely to report driving more due to lower gas prices than older Americans:

  • 19% of Americans aged 18 to 34 report driving more due to recent gas prices.
  • 10% of Americans aged 35 and above report driving more due to recent gas prices.

Miami-based motoring and travel organization AAA's report presents the findings of a telephone survey in mid-April of 1,007 adults, 504 men and 503 women, 18 years of age and older, living in the continental United States (506 interviews were from a landline sample and 501 interviews from a cellphone sample).
