Maine retailer converts majority of its convenience stores from Exxon to Shell brand
PORTLAND, Maine -- After 70 years as a distributor of Exxon motor fuels for the state of Maine, Dead River Co. has selected the Shell brand to retail across the majority of its Maine-based gasoline stations and convenience stores. The decision was made in part by Exxon Mobil Corp. deciding to discontinue all of its indirect and direct retail gasoline sales in the Northeastern states.

"The Shell brand brings unique opportunities to Dead River Co. our customers and to our dealers," said Alan Dorr, Dead River Convenience Stores general manager. "Shell is the No. 1 selling gasoline [image-nocss] in America," he said. "Shell offers a premium quality Nitrogen Enriched Gasoline... Shell also has the largest gasoline credit card network with multiple consumer offerings that pay rebates up to 5%, as well as the...debit Saver Card, a convenient payment method that directly links to a consumer's checking account."

Since February, 16 out of the company's more than 20 locations and dealer sites have converted to the Shell brand, Dead River said.

To celebrate the changeover to the Shell brand, Dead River Convenience locations will be hosting grand-opening events featuring the Shell-Pennzoil No. 29 Sprint Cup Series Show Car, which is driven by Kevin Harvick. The events are scheduled for June 19 at Dead River Convenience, Belfast; June 20 at Trenton Marketplace, Trenton; June 23 at Dead River Convenience, Caribou; June 24 at Dead River Convenience, Houlton; June 25 at Dead River Convenience, Brunswick; June 26 at Dead River Convenience, Gray; and June 27 at Dead River Convenience, Rumford.

Organized in 1909, in Bangor, Maine, Dead River is still owned by the descendents of the company founder, Charles Hutchins. With more than 1100 employees, Dead River is the largest distributor of residential heating fuels (propane, home heating oil, and kerosene) in northern New England and operates a chain of convenience stores in Maine. The Portland, Maine-based company's Dead River Properties division is actively engaged in commercial real estate, developing, owning and managing a large portfolio of properties that includes office buildings, industrial buildings and shopping centers in states from Maine to Florida.
