The Zarco gas station, opened in February in Lawrence, Kansas, is owned by Scott Zaremba and Zarco 66 Inc.
The Green Energy Gateway is an initiative of Environmental Protection Agency [image-nocss] Region 7 to promote sustainable and energy saving practices at gas stations. Maria Morey of the Division of Waste Management accepted the award for KDHE during a conference in Burlington, Vt.
"The Green Energy Gateway was perfect for what we were looking for," said Kolin Anglin, president or the North American Hazardous Materials Management Association. "We're looking for new ideas to promote reuse, recycling, green chemistry, using of alternative fuels and energy, and reducing the use of fossil fuels. The Green Energy Gateway does all of that."
The Zarco kiosk site offers five types of biodiesel fuel and four blends of ethanol and gasoline. It uses florescent lighting, solar panels and a wind turbine to cut energy needs. Its drive-thru coffee shop is topped with a living roof to reduce water runoff and save on cooling costs.
Ultimately, the goal of the site, which was honored with the EPA's Blue Skyways Award in July, is to let consumers know the little things they do can make a big difference.
Using Dresser Wayne's iX Media pumps, Zaremba aims "to educate them on the simple things of turning off the lights when you leave the house, making sure that you can conserve and recycle when you come to this facility and bring us your cans, bring us your recycling when you come back here."
