Gulf Returns to Maryland

Bedford Valley Petroleum brings brand back to Old Line State

CUMBERLAND, Md. & FRAMINGHAM, Mass. -- Gulf Oil LP has signaled its branded return to Maryland yesterday by announcing a branded distributor partnership with Bedford Valley Petroleum Corp., which will soon begin rebranding nine retail motor fuel outlets in Pennsylvania and Maryland to the new Gulf "Sunrise" image.

"We are excited to be able to bring the Gulf family to Maryland and build upon its strong reputation," said Bob Salathe III, president of Bedford Valley Petroleum, Everett, Pa. "Gulf is a natural partner for us, and this is just the beginning for the Gulf [image-nocss] brand in the Mid-Atlantic region."

Earlier this year, Gulf Oil acquired all title and interests to the Gulf brand from Chevron USA Inc. It now controls the right to market the brand throughout the United States and its territories. (Click here for previous Gulf coverage in CSP Daily News).

"Our expansion story continues," said Gulf Oil senior vice president and chief sales and marketing officer Rick Dery. "The enthusiasm on behalf of branded distributors to be part of the resurgence of Gulf in these markets continues to grow. We are thrilled that we will soon be able to serve Maryland's driving public with Bedford Valley Petroleum."

Since the January announcement of its expansion plans, Gulf has secured terminal space in 30 additional terminals in 7 states throughout the Southeast.

"Gulf has been supplying Maryland and Virginia with unbranded product on a consistent basis for several years," said Gulf Oil president and COO Ron Sabia. "We also have a long history of purchasing product from Gulf Coast refineries and shipping this product via pipeline through the Southeast into New York harbor. Our supply staff has done an extraordinary job at securing additional terminal space and we are well positioned to service the dynamic supply requirements of branded distributors in Maryland and throughout the Southeast. Gulf has enjoyed unparalleled branded growth in the last two years, and we are focused and committed to the same level of growth in these new markets."

Gulf Oil, based in Framingham, Mass., is one of the Northeast's largest wholesalers of refined petroleum products. It distributes motor fuels through a network of more than 2,000 branded gasoline retail centers, 12 proprietary oil terminals and a network of more than 50 other supply terminals. Gulf Oil supplies gasoline, heating oil, diesel fuel, jet fuel and kerosene through its Gulf Oil terminal network. Through its unbranded subsidiary, Great Island Energy, Gulf Oil also supplies petroleum products as well as risk management and financial services to industrial, commercial and independent retail firms.
