DALLAS and FINDLAY, Ohio -- Two more fuel brands have achieved Top Tier certification.
The Top Tier detergent standard for gasoline was introduced by eight automakers in 2004 to ensure fuel quality, as well as vehicle performance and compliance to tougher emissions requirements. Today, more than 50 fuel brands are Top Tier certified, representing about two-thirds of fuel sold in the United States and Canada.
One of the two newest brands to join the certification program is Sunoco LP’s Sunoco Ultratech, which will be available at all its branded sites across all gasoline grades, beginning in April.
"Customers tell us that they highly value the increased engine efficiency and durability benefits that may result from the regular use of high detergent fuel,” said Mark Burford, senior director of marketing strategy and design for Dallas-based Sunoco LP. “With the introduction of Sunoco Ultratech, customers will have the same detergent level as Sunoco NASCAR fuel, continuing our tradition of high-quality products."
Meanwhile, Marathon Petroleum Corp. (MPC) announced that all grades of its Marathon brand gasoline were now Top Tier-certified.
“Marathon gasoline continues to provide our customers the assurance of quality associated with the STP brand and will remove the accumulation of harmful deposits and improve the performance of their vehicle’s engine,” said Bill McCleave, director of brand marketing for MPC, Findlay, Ohio.
Marathon brand gasoline, which is available in 19 states, has featured STP additives for more than a decade.
A study by AAA found that Top Tier-certified gasoline had a measurable effect on the cleanliness and operation of a vehicle’s engine. To sell Top Tier certified gasoline, fuel retailers pay an annual license fee based on their number of sites, and a per-gallon cost, estimated in the tenths of a cent.
