Gouging Grumbling in Canada, Too

Pol launches "Pump Shock in Pictures" campaign, cites pricing study

QUEEN'S PARK, Ontario -- Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of Provincial Parliament Gilles Bisson has invited motorists in the Canadian province to "fight back" against gasoline-price gouging by taking part in Pump Shock in Pictures, an NDP campaign "that lets everyday Ontarians blow the whistle on Ontario's worst gas-price ripoff artists."

Bisson is inviting motorists to email him pictures of stations in their community that they believe are engaging in price gouging at the pump. Those Bisson deems the worst will be inducted into the Pump Shock [image-nocss] Hall of Shame.

"High gas prices got you down? Now is your chance to fight back and say enough is enough. Take part in the NDP's Pump Shock in Pictures campaign. Send in photographs. Tell us your story. Together, we'll take this fight to the big gas companies and to the premierand we'll get the people of Ontario fair, stable and predictable prices at the pumps," Bisson said.

Bisson and the NDP said that they are championing regulating gasoline price. They claimed that it will stop gasoline price volatility; eliminate opportunistic price gouging; and deliver fair, stable and predictable fuel pricesand lower gasoline prices long term. Ontario is the only province east of Manitoba with no form of gasoline price regulation.

The NDP's campaign against price gouging has been given an added boost, Bisson said, by a new report released by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives that said Canadians are being gouged at the pump, paying in excess of 15 cents per liter more for gasoline than justified by costs and historic petroleum industry profit margins.
