MONTREAL -- Imperial Oil won't be changing the French names of its convenience stores in Quebec after all, reported the Canadian Press.
Officials at the oil company had planned to rename their Marche Express stores in Quebec to On The Run to conform with its stores in the rest of the country. But French-language rights groups vowed protests and boycotts if the plan went ahead.
Robert Theberge, an Imperial Oil spokesperson, said the company heard the complaints and will respect the wishes of consumers.
The [image-nocss] name change would have affected stores at Imperial's 54 Esso gas stations in Quebec.
Separately, the Nova Scotia government has chosen Gardner Pinfold Consulting Economists to review gasoline and diesel fuel regulation in the Canadian province.
The review will cover everything from price stability and support for gas stations, especially those in rural areas, to the cost of regulation. It will also assess the pricing model and recommend any improvements as part of assessing whether the policy is meeting objectives.
The provinces current gas regulation system has faced criticism from consumers who complain prices still remain high, and gasoline retailers and wholesalers who say they cant make a profit under regulation.
The final report is to be delivered by April 1.
