VPS, Sheetz, Rutter's, CEFCO among chains teeing up donations at recent events

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- VPS Convenience Store Group is hosting its 30th Annual Summer Swing Golf Tournament & Auction to benefit the Boy Scouts of America, Cape Fear Council, on June 11-12, 2013.

It will hold a dinner and auction at Wrightsville Beach, and the golf tournament will take place at Cape Fear National Golf Club at Brunswick Forest in Leland, N.C.

To date, VPS has contributed more than $1.2 million to the Cape Fear Council Scouting program in southeastern North Carolina. All money raised from the event goes directly to the Boy Scouts to provide financial assistance for any Scout who needs help to participate in activities or attend summer camp. It also supports the Council's "Scoutreach" program to inner-city and rural areas of southeastern North Carolina.

This annual golf tournament has become the largest fundraising event in the history of the Cape Fear Council Boy Scout program.

Rich Mione, senior director of merchandising for VPS, is the chairman of the tournament.

VPS Convenience Store Group, Wilmington, N.C., operates 420 stores under six brand names including Scotchman, Village Pantry, Li'l Cricket, Young's Food Stores, Everyday Shops and Next Door Stores.

Separately, former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith and NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus were among the names that headlined the 15th Annual Sheetz Family Charities "For the Kidz" Golf Classic at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va., on June 3. Motley Crue rocker Vince Neil, Atlanta Braves David Justice, Charlotte Hornets Larry Johnson, Washington Redskins Mark Brunell, Pittsburgh Steelers Jack Ham, Mel Blount, Mike Wagner and LC Greenwood also playing in the charity event.

The golf outing is a major fundraising effort for the Sheetz Family Charities that benefits the company's Christmas program for underprivileged children who are identified with the help of the Salvation Army. It used proceeds from last year's golf event to help more than 6,900 children

Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz Inc. has more than 440 locations across six states--Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina.

Meanwhile, golfers teed off in late April at the Outdoor County Club in York, Pa., at the 11th annual golf outing to benefit Rutter’s Children’s Charities. The two-day event, the proceeds from which total over $1 million since its beginning in 2002, brings together suppliers from across the country to support the effort of Rutter’s Children’s Charities to improve the lives of local children.

This year, the Make-a-Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania will receive a donation from Rutter’s to fulfill the dreams of local children battling life-threatening illnesses. Also, Chambersburg Hospital will use the donation it receives from Rutter’s to purchase a Panda Warmer and Resuscitation Center, a cutting-edge piece of neonatal care equipment, which will ensure the highest standard of treatment for the hospital’s tiniest and most fragile children.

Rutter's Farm Stores Inc., York, is a third-generation, family-owned business with approximately 60 convenience stores located throughout central Pennsylvania.

And as previously reported in CSP Daily News, CEFCO Convenience Stores and parent company Fikes Wholesale Inc. announced at the 12th Annual "Hackers-R-Us" Charity Golf Tournament on May 14 it donated a record $650,000 to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals and McLane Children's Hospital Scott & White.

Temple, Texas-based CEFCO is a major company-operated chain in the convenience retailing industry, operating more than 250 stores in Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana and Arkansas.
