Sheetz again recognized among Ohio's best employers
ALTOONA, Pa. -- "Sheetz is the best company I've ever worked for," said Melissa Thomas of North Lima, Ohio. "I feel wanted and appreciated, and a real part of the Sheetz team." Thomas is a manager at the Sheetz convenience store at North Lima, and her work experience is one reason Sheetz Inc. has once again been named one of the Best Employers in Ohio, the company said.

Sheetz ranked No. 4 in the 2010 survey. It has received this honor for the fourth time in the past five years. Sheetz also took a spot on a similar list in North Carolina and has made Pennsylvania's list [image-nocss] for the eighth year in a row.

Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz has 29 locations in Ohio and employs more than 846 people in the state. The employees are eligible for a host of benefits including a quarterly bonus, 401k with company match and an employee stock ownership plan

"I like the working conditions and the way Sheetz helps us serve our customers," added Rieko Takara, a sales associate in Calcutta, Ohio. "The benefits are great too. It's just a great place to work."

"I enjoy the hours and the working conditions. It's like my second home and my second family," said Thomas. "Sheetz gives me the tools I need to succeed. I know that if I need help with a problem, all I have to do is ask," added Takara.

"This is a tremendous honor," said Stan Sheetz, president and CEO. "It is extra special because the award reflects what our employees think of this company. It is gratifying to know our employee family is as happy with us as we are with them."

Sheetz is one of only 10 large Ohio companies to receive the award.

Winners were chosen by the Best Companies Group through a two-part process of evaluation: 25% of a company's score was based on workplace policies, philosophy, systems and demographics, while 75% consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determined the final rankings

The Best Employers in Ohio survey and award program is designed to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in the state of Ohio, benefiting the state's economy, its workforce and businesses. Sheetz was evaluated for its workplace policies, practices, philosophy, systems and demographics, and employees were questioned on their experiences. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration, survey and analysis process and determined the final rankings.

In other company news, a new Sheetz store opened in Keyser, W. Va., on Thursday, reported The Mineral Daily News. Steve Augustine, director of real estate for the retailer, told the newspaper, "The day the new one opens, the old one will close."

One of the biggest changes will be the expanded number of gasoline dispensers, said the report. Where the old store offered six pumps, the new Sheetz features 12 fuel stations. The store itself is nearly double in size, growing from 3,000 square feet to just under 5,000 square feet. The whole range of food, drink and other products will be greatly expanded, with food preparation and service areas, as well as restrooms, much larger in size.

"The product offering will be about the same, it will just be more efficient," Augustine said. "The old store did very good business, but it was just hampered by size issues, including the parking lot."

And Sheetz is opening two new stores in Rocky Mount, N.C., as part of its expansion in the eastern part of the state, reported The Rocky Mount Telegram. One of the locations is slated to open June 17, the other later in the summer.

The new stores, which will bring the number of company's outlets in North Carolina to 27, are part of Sheetz's plans to add new stores between Statesville and Greenville, said the report.

Jamie Gerhart, who works for the chain's development division in Raleigh, N.C., told the newspaper that Sheetz has been interested in expanding into Rocky Mount for some time. "Geographically, it fits into where we currently operate. We've looked at Rocky Mount from the very beginning of our expansion into North Carolina."

Other early June store openings are slated for Clymer, Pa. (June 2); Charles Town, W.Va. (June 3); Linden, Pa. (June 3); and Franklin, Pa. (June 10), according to the company's website.

A family-owned and -operated convenience store chain, Sheetz had more than $3.7 billion in revenue for 2009 and more than 13,000 employees. The company operates more than 360 convenience locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. It provides a menu of Made-To-Order (MTO) subs, sandwiches and salads, which are ordered through touchscreen order point terminals. All Sheetz c-stores are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
