Double Dose of Sheetz

Retailer to test effects of having two stores on one busy street

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- Sheetz Inc. will conduct a retail experiment next year when it will test the benefit of operating two stores on opposite sides of a busy street, Scalp Avenue in Johnstown, Pa., reported The Tribune-Democrat.

Company officials told Richland Township planners that the company will continue operating the existing Sheetz at the corner of Scalp and Eisenhower Boulevard for at least a year after opening a new, larger store immediately across the street in University Park Plaza, the newspaper said.

The company presented plans for a new 6,000-square-foot [image-nocss] store during a workshop session following a Richland Township Planning Commission meeting Tuesday, it added.

"The plan for the existing store is for it to exist, as is, and operate, as is," Bob Franks, engineering and permit manager for Sheetz Inc., said during Tuesday's workshop.

"We decided to perform a bit of a test."

Established in 1952 in Altoona, Sheetz Inc. is one of America's fastest growing family-owned and operated convenience store chains, with more than $4.9 billion in revenue for 2010 and more than 13,500 employees. The company operates nearly 400 convenience locations throughout Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina. Sheetz provides a menu of Made-To-Order (MTO) subs, sandwiches and salads, which are ordered through unique touch-screen order point terminals. Sheetz currently ranks on the Best Places to Work list in Ohio and North Carolina and has been on that list in Pennsylvania for eight consecutive years. All Sheetz convenience stores are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
