Kum & Go Living on Tulsa Time

Opens new, larger stores in market to compete on QuikTrip's home turf

TULSA, Okla. -- Kum & Go LC has opened two new convenience stores in Tulsa, Okla. These newly constructed stores expand Kum & Go's presence to 27 stores in the Tulsa metropolitan area and 52 stores across all of Oklahoma.

The nearly 5,000-square-foot stores introduce many new features both inside and outside the buildings. Inside, customers will find a larger product selection, a center checkout area with customer-focused staff and an expanded Go Fresh Market offering made-to-order pizzas, breakfast and deli sandwiches and baked goods, all made fresh daily at Kum & Go's onsite kitchen.

Outside, a larger number of fueling positions, as well more variety in fuel offerings, give customers more choices and value at the pump.

Kum & Go entered Tulsa in 2004 when it purchased the struggling Tulsa-based Git-n-Go chain and its 76 stores, including nine in Oklahoma. Kum & Go started building 3,400-sq.-ft. stores in the market shortly thereafter, and executives have committed the company to becoming a strong competitor to QuikTrip, reported The Tulsa World. QuikTrip Corp., based there, has about 70 stores in the market.

"We're excited to bring our newest store design to Tulsa," president and CEO Kyle J. Krause said. "This store layout has been created with our customers in mind. From fresh, made-from-scratch food options, to a wide selection in products, all aspects of our stores have been configured to focus on delivering fast, friendly customer service."

Another distinguishing feature of Kum & Go's new store design is the strong emphasis on sustainability. Kum & Go designs and constructs the stores with LEED certification in mind. Each store is submitted under these rigorous guidelines to become LEED certified. Sustainable features of these two new Kum & Go stores include Solatube skylights, LED lighting both inside and outside the store, low-flow water efficient fixtures and high energy-efficiency equipment. Each store is built using recyclable materials and locally sourced materials.

"We're passionate about the communities we serve. We demonstrate that passion first by bringing an eco-friendly store," said Krause. "And, second, by giving back. We donate 10% of our profits to educational and charitable causes every year."

West Des Moines, Iowa-based Kum & Go has more than 400 convenience stores in 11 states (Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming). In addition to a wide selection of name-brand products, Kum & Go provides a proprietary mix of proprietary products under the Hiland brand name, including Java Ridge Premium Coffee, Napa Creek and Sea Ridge wines, Go Fresh Market sandwiches and Nuclear energy drinks.
