NACS Names Retailers to Board

Six from 7-Eleven, ARCO, T&C, OXXO, Rotten Robbie's, The Market

LAS VEGAS -- At the NACS Show 2006 in Las Vegas last week, the National Association of Convenience Stores announced the election of six retail members to serve on its board of directors. The new members assumed their positions during the NACS board meeting on October 11.

The NACS retail members elected to serve on the board are:

Masa Asakura, executive vice president and COO of 7-Eleven Inc., Dallas. Asakura joined Seven-Eleven Japan, 7-Eleven Inc.'s largest licensee, in 1976 and has served a variety of operations positions, including field counselor [image-nocss] and district manager. For several years, he worked in the companys merchandising department, where he was responsible for numerous products, including the Slurpee. In 1987, he was named general manager and was responsible for drinks, dairy, frozen grocery, ice cream and fast foods. In 1990, Asakura was assigned to Seven-Eleven Hawaii as general manager and executive vice president. In 1996, he became general manager of Seven-Eleven Japans planning department and was responsible for overseas affiliates. He joined 7-Eleven Inc. in 1997 as senior vice president/international liaison and was named to his current position in 2005. Hagop (Jack) Kofdarali, president of J&R Oil Co. Inc., Corona, Calif. J&R Oil operates 12 stores in Southern California, all branded ARCO am/pm. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, he came to the United States in 1982 and he, along with his family, purchased his first business, a liquor store, in Newport Beach, Calif. In 1990, they purchased their first gas station, in Calimesa, Calif. In 2000, Kofdarali became sole owner of J&R Oil and continued to grow the business. J&R Oil, along with specializing in finding the station sites and building them from ground up, also specializes in building commercial retail centers. It currently has five more sites in the entitlement process due for completion and delivery sometime in 2007. Kofdarali also owns and manages approximately 950 apartment units in Texas. Alvin New, president and CEO of Town & Country Food Stores Inc., San Angelo, Texas. New also is beginning a one-year term as the NACS vice chairman of NACSPAC, where he will oversee the efforts of the NACSPAC political action committee. He joined Town & Country in 1984 as a store clerk while attending college and has heldvarious positions in the operations, foodservice and marketing departments.New is one of six officers and directors of the company who successfully completed a management buyout of Town & Country in 1999. Today, Town & Country Food Stores operates 158 c-stores in west Texas, central Texas and eastern New Mexico, in addition to seven T&C Village Supermarkets in smaller West Texas towns. Eduardo Padilla, CEO of Cadena Comercial OXXO SA de CV, Monterrey, Mexico. Cadena Comercial OXXO operates 4,650 stores in Mexico. The company is part of FEMSA, which in addition to owning OXXO, the retail division, also owns Coca-Cola FEMSA Latin America, the second-largest bottler of Coca-Cola, and FEMSA Cerveza, the brewery that includes the brands Dos Equis, Sol and Tecate. Padilla has been CEO of OXXO since 2000. Before that, he served as senior vice president of planning and corporate control for FEMSA SA from 1997 to 1999, and CEO of TERZA SA from 1987 to 1996. Tom Robinson, CEO of Robinson Oil Corp., San Jose, Calif. Robinson Oil operates 32 Rotten Robbie stores. Robinson has been with the companysince 1974. The fourth-generation companywasfounded in the1930s and has been operating under the Rotten Robbie brand since 1973. David Sutton, president of Tiger Fuel Co., Charlottesville, Va. Sutton is president of Tiger Fuel Co., which operates 15 The Market c-stores. The company also distributes fuel, including its own private-label brand, Excel, to 120 locations. Tiger Fuel also is the areas largest distributor of home heating fuels from its plants in Charlottesville and Lovingston, Va.

NACS is lead by a 42-member board; 40 industry retailers are elected to the board, including two retailers from non-North American countries. In addition, the chairman and chairman-elect of the NACS Supplier Board also serve on the board.
