Calloway Oil Adds New Gilbarco Technology

New security camera interface helps with shrink; firm releases e-CRIND

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Calloway Oil Co. said that it has added Gilbarco Veeder-Root's new security camera interface for Passport Version 5, built on the PCATS NAXML standard for a richer integration experience.

This new interface offers real-time journal data to Passport customers, allowing for better employee control and reduced shrinkage in their stores, Greensboro, N.C.-based Gilbarco Veeder-Root said.

Passport interfaces with both newer TCP/IP connectible as well as serial security cameras. And once the system is in place, every [image-nocss] touch made at the point of sale (POS) is captured and recorded by the security camera, including no sales and voids. This capture allows for careful monitoring of each transaction, and therefore more tools for researching suspicious activity, said the company.

Now that this integrated system is in place with Passport and our GE StoreSafe DVR, our control over store profits has tightened even more, said Jason Burchfiel, IT manager for Maryville, Tenn.-based Calloway Oil.

Marty Calloway, CEO of the retailer, agreed. Passport's management functionality overall has dramatically improved the operation of our stores. Our store managers are more efficient, thanks to the rich reports and ease of accessing data, he said.

Kirsten Paust, vice president Retail Systems for Gilbarco Veeder-Root said, The new security camera interface we are incorporating into our latest Passport version provides our customers with much-needed real-time data to improve store controls at the POS.

In other Gilbarco news, the firm has announced an enhancement to the Encore-S fuel dispenser product line called e-CRIND, the next evolution of the Gilbarco CRIND platform. This new offering enables retailers to turn dispensers into forecourt profit centers by offering functionality such as color screens, integrated merchandising and custom ordering applications.

The platform supports a number of programs such as Gilbarco's SMART Merchandising and on-screen menus for food ordering at the pump. With this interactive, multimedia advertising and couponing program, vibrant color screens and content management tools, the e-CRIND platform allows retailers to create and manage promotions, coupons and transaction screens at the pump.

According to Andrew Robinson, director of global payment systems for Gilbarco Veeder-Root, e-CRIND delivers this functionality without requiring any changes to existing point of sale devices or interfaces. "We understand the importance of backwards compatibility with investments that have already been made," he said. "As a result, we are providing apayment platform that delivers newfunctionality without the need to change any existing POS interfaces."

The e-CRIND platform can be further upgraded for sites requiring fully unattended fueling or for those wanting POS processing in the dispenser itself. In these instances, e-CRIND can be configured to have resident POS capability, thereby providing fault tolerant fueling and ensuring that the dispenser is always up and running, regardless of the status of the in-store POS.

Gilbarco Veeder-Root built the platform with open architecture in mind, it said. It integrated key open-source technologies like the Linux operating system and Apache web server. Also, it used standard industry tools like Java, in developing the software platform. Authorized third parties will be encouraged to customize applications to meet customer needs, said the firm.
