GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- American Gas & Oil Inc. (AGO) has purchased five Grand Rapids, Mich.-area Meijer gas stations and convenience stores and converted them to the CITGO brand.

As reported in a 21st Century Smoke/CSP Daily News Flash, supermarket and mass merchandiser Meijer Inc. plans to close one of its supermarkets and has sold the five company-owned standalone gas station c-stores to AGO.

The companies did not disclose the terms of the deal.

"The sale of these facilities is consistent with Meijer's broader desire to provide 'one-stop shopping' for our customers by having gas stations and Meijer supercenters connected through a single site," Meijer spokesperson Joe Hirschmugl told MiBiz.com.

The company offered all employees the opportunity to transfer to other stores, he said.

Building on expansion efforts initiated this summer, AGO's acquisitions of these five stores will increase its CITGO footprint in Michigan. The gas stations are located in Alpine Township, Byron Township, Greenville, Kentwood and Lansing.

In July 2014, AGO converted 19 stations across western Michigan to CITGO.

"These new locations are a great asset for American Gas & Oil and CITGO, and we look forward to providing quality service for our customers," said Jason F. Berris, president of AGO. "We've been working closely with Meijer to make this a smooth transition for both customers and employees. As a growing company, we're extremely proud to announce that all employees at these five new CITGO stations will either maintain their jobs at these locations or with Meijer."

The new CITGO-branded locations commenced operations February 27, following a two-day changeover period. The company is planning grand opening celebrations and community open houses for later this spring.

Meijer is a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based retailer that operates 213 supercenters and grocery stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky, most with adjacent gas stations and convenience stores.

Sparta, Mich.-based AGO owns and operates 27 CITGO locations across western Michigan.
