VOLUSIA, Fla. --Wawa Inc. convenience stores is proceeding with plans to open three c-stores in Volusia County, Florida, according to reports.
The stores will be the chain’s first in the Volusia-Flagler, Fla., area and are part of a push by the retailer, which has 50 stores in Florida, to double that number in the next two years, according to a Daytona Beach News-Journal report.
All three locations—two in Port Orange and one in Orange City—currently have “coming soon” signs posted on them.
One of the Port Orange sites is a 5,537-square-foot Wawa store that will include a 16 fuel pumps. The project received site plan approval from the city in April. A former Asian Fusion Buffet restaurant on the site was demolished to make room for the c-store.
The second location in Port Orange recently won approval from the city. That store is set to be built about 2 miles east of the first location.
The estimated construction cost for the Orange City location is $1 million, Alison Stettner, the city’s development services director, told the newspaper. A building construction permit has not yet been filed, but Stettner said the site plan calls for a 6,000-square-foot store with 12 gas pumps.
Tim Burman, senior planner for Port Orange, said Wawa wants to open the two Port Orange stores at the same time.
“That would be ideal for us because that would disperse the crowds coming to look at the novel stores between two locations,” Burman said.
The Wawa, Pa.-based chain operates more than 650 convenience stores. Nearly two-thirds of those stores include gas stations. The retailer has stores in five Mid-Atlantic states and Florida. Its stores typically employ between 15 and 20 workers.
