WARREN, Mich. -- Inspired Organics LLC, a division of Lipari Foods LLC, has voluntarily recalled its Organic Sunflower Butter due to traces of listeria monocytogenes, the pathogenic bacteria that causes the listeria infection.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
The product was distributed in April 2018 to retailers throughout Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Ontario, Canada.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) discovered the contamination after routine product testing showed positive results for a potential trace of the bacteria. Inspired Organics is working with Lipari Foods, the MDARD and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to understand the cause of the situation and ensure the complete removal of all products from shelves.
Listeria monocytogenes has been the cause of multiple product recalls in convenience stores this year. In May, Hickory Harvest Foods recalled six different nut mixes due to the bacteria. These snacks were sold at Liberty Snacks, Heinen's, Pilot Flying J Travel Centers, Diamond Gasoline and Petro locations in 33 U.S. states. Three months later, Premo Brand and FreshGrab turkey and Swiss sandwiches were recalled due to a potential listeria contamination. Both sandwiches were produced by JLM, the sister company of Lipari Foods.
Warren, Mich.-based Lipari Foods produces brands in the confection, bakery, foodservice, grocery and packaging industries. Besides Inspired Organics, its brands include Michigan Brand, Yoder’s, Dairy Fresh and Pic-A-Nut.
