Kroger, IRI Forge Data Deal

Grocery, c-store retailer names IRI as preferred market measurement partner

CINCINNATI and CHICAGO -- Grocery and convenience-store retailer The Kroger Co. has reached a long-term agreement with retail data-services firm IRI for IRI to be Kroger’s preferred partner for market measurement services, which will provide Kroger and its supplier partners a common view of their business performance compared to the rest of the market.

The IRI Liquid Data technology platform and product movement and causal data—which includes weather, gas and macroeconomic factors—will help Kroger and its suppliers collaborate more easily and make better decisions to benefit customers, the companies said.

“IRI and Kroger are at the forefront of the shifting landscape by providing better market measurement data and industry-leading technology to create highly personalized consumer marketing to drive growth,” said Andrew Appel, president and CEO of IRI.

“We believe IRI has the best tools and technology to allow both Kroger and our suppliers to share a comprehensive view of industry-wide product-movement data,” said Mike Donnelly, Kroger’s executive vice president of merchandising.

Chicago-based IRI is a leading provider of big data, predictive analytics and forward-looking insights that help consumer packaged goods, over-the-counter health-care organizations, retailers and media companies to grow their businesses. It has a repository of purchase, media, social, causal and loyalty data, integrated on an on-demand, cloud-based technology platform.

Based in Cincinnati, Kroger owns approximately 2,780 supermarkets with 1,390 fuel centers under a variety of banners in 35 states and the District of Columbia. It has approximately 785 convenience stores (about 725 with fuel) under six banners in 19 states: Kwik Shop, Loaf N' Jug, Quik Stop Markets, Tom Thumb Food Stores, Turkey Hill Minit Markets and Smith’s Express. It recently added a Kroger c-store banner.
