Major Meijer Upgrade

Big-box chain rolls out Gilbarco's contactless card readers

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Some 150 Meijer Stores that sell gasoline will upgrade their more than 1,850 fueling positions with Gilbarco's ISO 14443 contactless card payment system.

Gilbarco's contactless payment system at the pump provides our customers with a faster and more convenient fueling experience with more payment options, said Michael Ross, director of marketing strategy and customer financial services. The technology is one of the new tools we have to improve customer loyalty and speed transaction time. Gilbarco's contactless system provides Meijer [image-nocss] with the most cost effective, safe, and integrated point-of-sale solution in the marketplace.

The system chosen by Meijer protects their customers by preserving the regulatory listings and warranty on the host dispensers. The integrated system is currently the only product that is certified by all three major card companies for use in a gas pump, according to Gilbarco global product manager Whit Edwards.

The rollout is expected to be complete by the end of November 2005. Upon completion of the Meijer rollout, Greensboro, N.C.-based Gilbarco will have more than 6,500 contactless readers installed in fuel dispensers in North America, it said. Gilbarco Veeder-Root and Gasboy areleading suppliers of integrated fuel control, site management and support services for petroleum marketers and commercial fueling enterprises worldwide.

Meijer is a Grand Rapids, Mich.-based grocery and general merchandise supercenter retailer operating 170 stores throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.
