RaceTrac Raises $250,000 for Michael J. Fox Foundation

2012 "Coffee for a Cause" efforts aim to double 2011 donation to Parkinson's research

ATLANTA -- RaceTrac committed to raise $250,000 for The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) during its 2012 "Coffee for a Cause." It is donating proceeds from all cups of coffee and specially marked World's Finest Chocolate bars sold April 1-7 to the foundation.

Guests also have the opportunity to donate at the counter or online throughout April, Parkinson's Awareness Month.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that affects an estimated one million Americans. The MJFF is dedicated to funding research to speed more effective treatments and a cure for Parkinson's.

"Many of our team members and guests have a personal stake in finding a cure for Parkinson's," said Allison Moran, RaceTrac senior vice president. "They're the ones who made it possible for us to donate $130,000 to [the MJFF] last year by really getting behind our efforts and encouraging others to do the same. I expect to be completely wowed by their generosity and enthusiasm this year."

Select RaceTrac markets will also host Founder's Day 5K runs to draw attention to the cause. For each RaceTrac employee who participates in the 5Ks, RaceTrac will donate $10 to MJFF.

In Atlanta, RaceTrac tested a new community event, RaceTrac's "Run for Research" 5K and Fun Run, with members of the MJFF staff on hand, on March 31. All proceeds, including 100% of registration fees, go to MJFF.

"It's thanks to partners such as RaceTrac that our foundation has been able to direct more than $285 million to Parkinson's research since 2000, pushing promising scientific discoveries toward pharmacy shelves and patients' hands," said Sheila Kelly, vice president of development of MJFF for Parkinson's Research. "The generosity of the RaceTrac family and its guests will help bring us one step closer to a cure for Parkinson's."

Based in Atlanta, RaceTrac has been serving guests since 1934. It operates more than 325 convenience store locations in four southeastern states.
