SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- Stewart's Shops was recently the first local business to step up and support a new program in Schenectady, N.Y., that involves the use of a state-of-the-art public surveillance camera system designed to help prevent crime, as well as apprehend individuals who choose to commit criminal acts in areas that are under surveillance.
This project is being spearheaded by Schenectady County District Attorney Robert Carney, with the support of City Mayor Brian Stratton, City Police Chief Michael Geraci and County officials.
Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-based Stewart's donated $3,500 to offset the cost of a camera system that has been installed near the company's Schenectady store.
We are happy to invest in Schenectady and the efforts there to make the city streets safer, said Gary Dake, Stewart's Shops president.
With this addition, the digital wireless public surveillance camera project now has nine cameras operating to protect a majority of the streets located in the Hamilton Hill and Vale neighborhoods.
In responding to Stewart's financial contribution, Carney said, I am excited that Stewart's has chosen to assist us in our efforts to use cutting-edge technology as a valuable law enforcement tool. I am hopeful that other entities will follow Stewart's lead and enter into similar private/public partnerships to assist our efforts in other parts of the city.
Stratton added, On behalf of city residents, I would like to also extend my thanks for this project which exemplifies how local businesses are making a positive impact on our law enforcement efforts.
Geraci concluded, Our department looks forward to utilizing the newly installed public surveillance camera to increase safety at this Stewart's location, as well the streets located near the store.
