COSTA MESA, Calif. -- At least 440 people had their debit card information stolen from ATMs in Costa Mesa, Calif., police said Friday, according to NBC4-TV.
Someone managed to get PIN information "by unknown means" from ATMs outside two Costa Mesa gas stations between September 29 and October 8, Sergeant Martin Carver told the news outlet, adding that a similar crime happened in Westminster about the same time.
The stolen information was used to create fake cards, which were used at casinos and gas stations in Las Vegas between [image-nocss] October 26 and 30, Carver added. "The loss is unknown but is expected to be in the thousands," he said.
Several law-enforcement agenciesincluding the Secret Service, Las Vegas Metro police and Costa Mesa economic crime detectivesare working on the case, said the report.
No suspects have been identified, Carver said.
Police believe that the thieves may be using a device called a "code grabber" to record PINs after a customer has used their card and left the machine, the report said.
