Wilson Farms Helping to Save the Earth

Retailer participating in National Reusable Bag Day

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. -- Convenience retailer Wilson Farms Neighborhood Food Stores, which operates the Wilson Farms, Wilson Farms Express and Sugarcreek Stores, is participating in National Reusable Bag Day on Saturday, April 21, 2007, the day before Earth Day.

Earth Share, a nationwide network of environmental and conservation organizations, and Earthwise Bag Co. Inc., a provider of reusable shopping bags, formed a partnership to launch the event, intended to generate national awareness of reusable bags as an environmentally friendly choice for reducing [image-nocss] waste and pollution, and helping to preserve the beauty of the natural landscape.

As part of the National Reusable Bag Day campaign, Earth Share and Earthwise are encouraging consumers to choose a reusable bag instead of disposable paper or plastic when shopping on April 21 and throughout the weekend, whether at the grocery store, convenience store, shopping mall or other stores. More than 2,000 grocery stores and other retail locations that already offer Earthwise bags throughout their stores all year are participating in the event. Some are contributing a portion of their proceeds from the reusable bags sold on Reusable Bag Day to environmental nonprofits such as Earth Share.

Earth Share is hearing from more and more people who are interested in reducing their impact on the environment, said Kalman Stein, President and CEO of Earth Share. Choosing to shop with reusable bags is a great example of how easy it can be to make small changes that have a positive impact. We're pleased to partner with Earthwise and their retail partners for Reusable Bag Day, and hope many consumers will be inspired to consider using these bags year round.

Steven Batzofin, vice president and co-founder of Earthwise, added, Our hope is that what we're doing is about more than just supporting Earth Day weekend. It's about empowering consumers to make a conscious choice every day that will ultimately help preserve our environment for years to come. The fact is, over 100 billion disposable plastic bags are used each year in the U.S.99% of which are not recycledand the production of paper bags is fairly energy intensive and requires cutting down trees. We can each take responsibility for enacting change, which collectively can be felt across the region, the nation, and eventually, the world.
