A Growler 'Tail'

Gas station adjacent to Cincinnati-area dog park opens Growler Stop

NEWTOWN, Ohio -- The WagsPark Shell Station in Newtown, Ohio, a Cincinnati suburb, has opened The Growler Stop, a 10-tap draft system serving beer from local breweries, reported The Akron Beacon Journal.

"Gas is a necessity item that we typically stop for multiple times a week, this provides a convenient opportunity to grab a local craft beer," Blaine Bacher, general manager of The Growler Stop and WagsPark Shell Station, said in a statement obtained by the newspaper. "In less time than it takes to fill your tank, we can fill a growler, too."

A news release calls it "Cincinnati's first growler pouring station outside of a grocery store or a brewery itself."

The Growler Stop opened in late October, said the report.

The "gas-growler concept isn't new," the report said. Sunoco launched the "Craft Beer Exchange Program" a few years ago at stations in western New York. The program has since expanded to other areas including South Carolina.

The Growler Stop will feature breweries such as: Blank Slate, Fifty West, MadTree, Mt. Carmel, Rivertown, Rhinegeist, Triple Digit and Listermann.

"Smaller breweries don't usually bottle their product, so this is an exciting time for local beer connoisseurs," Bobby Slattery, co-owner of Fifty West, said in a statement cited by the paper. "Local beer is definitely an in-demand product. Craft breweries who churn out innovative and unique-tasting suds have doubled their market share in the last 10 years. More and more people are buying local and The Growler Stop is just making it easier for them to do so."

But there's an additional twist to this "tail." The Growler Stop--pun undoubtedly intended--is at the WagsPark Shell, adjacent to WagsPark, which bills itself as "Newtown's Premier Private Dog Park."

In its description on its Facebook page, WagsPark says, "We have three acres of fenced-in fun, two spring fed lakes with official dock diving, agility for fun, splash zone and a 21-by-13-foot screen for sporting events and movies! Come join us for Yappy Hours with cold adult beverages!"
